Picking Up Padel

  • 1 year, 3 months, 2 weeks and 3 days since surgery

Right now I am still in Koh Phangan, Thailand. I come here (almost) every year for the kitesurfing season which usually comes from January to March.

This year so far there has not been much wind. I have been regularly hitting the gym, but I need another outlet after I gave up playing football.

Padel was the sport I chose to try. I haven’t played any racket sports before, but I decided to throw myself into it. It feels like I can progress to a good level even starting so late.

On top of that, it’s a great way to be social and connect with new people.

Here in Thailand, the sport is growing fast and there are already 3 or 4 clubs to play at on this small island of Koh Phangan.

Taken during training sessions at Zen Padel Phangan.

I am playing almost every day, with either a friendly game or a training session. Twice a week there are competitions which are helping me to increase my level under pressure.

My knee hasn’t bothered me at all, even with this high load. I am moving around the court fast, changing direction, and not holding back.

I am a bit conscious of my movements if the court is wet from rain or if I am feeling a bit tired. This is probably normal for most people, but in the past I have been quite reckless when playing sports. The last injury was mostly due to me pushing too hard when I was fatigued.

My Padel game is improving, and I can see this as my sport now. It’s helping me forget about leaving football behind.
